THE BIBLE AND THE MODERN INTELLECTUAL SKEPTICS: – IN DEFENSE OF THE BIBLE

In an age of relativity, skepticism, proliferation of technology, and confusion, people seem to be making up their own Bible, their own God, and their own Theology. However, I would like to share some information that might surprise some of us, and it is this:  Some of the most prominent scientists, politicians, archaeologists, and recent historical figures, believed in the Bible and used it as the basis for their work and for their own spiritual foundation and formation to strengthen and fortify themselves in their life and work.

It is interesting to note some facts researched and written in a book by: Ray Comfort entitled: “SCIENTIFIC FACTS in the BIBLE. …100 REASONS TO BELIEVE THE BIBLE IS SUPERNATURAL IN ORIGIN.  It was interesting to learn that Einstein believed in the Bible.  In Physics…Isaac Newton, in Chemistry: Boyle, Dalton, and Ramsay.  Biology…Mendel and Pasteur. Astronomy: Kepler, Galileo, and Herschel.  (I, myself am not fully familiar with all the details of their discoveries, except for maybe Newton, Galileo, and Pasteur, but I am sure GOOGLE will give us all the information we need on each of them.)  However, Mr. Comfort assures us that all these famous men believed in the CREATION OF THE UNIVERSE AND EVERYTHING IN IT TO BE BY DIVINE INTELLECT AND DESIGN. They are Creationists and not Evolutionists. “To them, the scientific enterprise was a high calling – one dedicated to thinking God’s thoughts after Him.”

It was more than a little disturbing to me to sit in a worship service recently, where a prominent minister in a very high position, and who holds several academic degrees, asserted that he did not trust some of the things the Bible said.  Basically, what I understood him to be saying is this: If the Bible did not agree with what he deems to be “compassion and mercy”, he would not accept it.  To a degree this is true.  However, according to Scripture, humanity was created in the likeness of the Creator and was given the will to choose right from wrong and good from evil, blessings vs. curses. Yet people in their disobedience and rebellion, can and do provoke the wrath of a Holy God.   Besides, if/when we fall short and sin, we are given a way of escape through confession and repentance.  Therefore, the human being is not without responsibility.  If we are going to trust and obey, only what pleases us and what suits us, and not what pleases the Creator, then we might as well become our own God.

Speaking for myself, I believe that even when I do not understand everything the Bible says, I believe in the God of the Bible, and I will still trust Him and His Word. While leaders are required to rightly divide the Word of Truth for the upbuilding the Body of Christ…the church, they/we are to be careful not to lead the people astray in order to appease or condone our own shortcomings or sins.  For God does not condone sin but forgives sins when we repent.  He forgives and tells us: “Go and sin no more.”

Ray Comfort begins his book by saying: “I Hope You Are Skeptical.”   I hope so too.  But even if we are not skeptical, I would invite us to equip yourself with the wealth of information in this tiny little book, so that when we encounter the skeptical intellectuals who may not know of greater men who believed in the Bible, we can introduce them to this book.  Thereby they might be edified and convinced.

My own life’s experiences and study of the Bible over many years have already convinced me that the Bible is “of supernatural origin.”  If my faith were not rooted and grounded in the Bible and of the God of the Bible, I don’t know how I would have survived and even managed to thrive.  IT’S ALL A MIRACLE TO ME!

Thank you, Ray Comfort, for this little book! I hope that people will be convinced that the Bible still is and will continue to be forever vital and relevant.  I am convinced that it is a book of supernatural origin and that the limited human mind may not be able to fully comprehend but can trust.
